Haram means prohibited by Allah.
Foods clearly prohibited include pork, blood, intoxicants and animals that die without valid Islamic slaughter. The Qur'an also prohibits animals killed through strangulation, a violent blow, a fall and other forms of death before proper slaughter.
A food being popular, common or widely available does not change its ruling.
